PESHAWAR: The Young Doctors Association (YDA) on Saturday went on hunger strike and set up a camp under the Malik Saad Shaheed Flyover for acceptance of their demands.
Led by YDA President Dr Alamgir Yousafzai, the young doctors presented the charter of demands to the provincial government and vowed to continue their strike till the acceptance of their demands.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Alamgir said they would continue the hunger strike but would not stop providing healthcare to the patients.
He alleged that the government had deceived them on various pretexts in the past and forced them to launch protest in support of their genuine demands.
The demands included provision of free medicines, laboratory investigations, CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and free meals to the patients in all the public sector hospitals of the province.
Other demands include provision of service structure to doctors, foolproof security, regularising services of the doctors registered with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) and finding permanent solution to the problems of house officers and trainee medial officers (TMOs).
“We launched protest drive after the government failed to address our concerns,” argued Dr Musa Kaleem, president of Provincial Health Employees Coordination Council (HECC).
He said though the government had constructed a building for the Post-Graduate Paramedical Institute at a cost of Rs250 million in Peshawar, it has been allocated to the Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical College.
He asked the government to return the building to the Paramedical Institute to pave the way for better training of the paramedical staff.
He also demanded the government to take on board all the employees regarding policy formulation and decision-making to improve healthcare services in the public sector hospitals and solve the problems being faced by the health department employees
